Transcript from the Doncaster Gazette dated Friday, December 10, 1915The new Wesleyan Church at Carcroft, built under the auspices of the South Yorkshire Coalfields Commission, was, formally opened for worship on Thursday afternoon last, six months, almost to the day, after the ceremony of laying the foundation stones, which was performed on June '3rd. The doors were opened by Miss Joy Markham, a youthful daughter of Sir Arthur Markham, Bart., M.P., Lady Markham who had been invited to perform the ceremony, being prevented by her public duties from acceding to the invitation. Miss Markham was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. W. Humble, of Skellow Hall and the proceedings outside the Church door were conducted by the Rev. G. H. Pickering, superintendent of the Priory Place Circuit. Others present included the Rev, Josiah Mee, superintendent of the South Yorkshire Mission , the Rev. John Talbot (Priory Place), the Rev. Mark H. EarI (Bentley); the Rev P. S. Grimshaw (Thorne), the Rev Johnson, Secretary of the Conference, Alderman C. Theobald, J.P., Mr. Walter Roberts, F.R.G.S., Mr. Hinchcliff, J.P.,. Mr. G. Slack, Mr. G. H. Atkinson, Mr. A. G. Barte, B.A., Mr. J. T. Brears: etc: Before the opening ceremony at the new building , the members and friends reassembled at the old chapel which has done service so long, and here, the doors having been closed, a hymn was sung, .and the company went in procession to the now new home of Carcroft Methodism.THE CEREMONYThe Rev. G. H. Pickering, introducing Miss Markham, remarked that they had 'just said "Good Bye" to the old chapel. They had received the sanction of the Chapel Trustees and had hoped to have the certification of the new building, but this was not yet to hand from the Registrar General; however, it was on the way, When they were making arrangements for the opening function be continued, it was the unanimous desire of the friends that Lady Markham should be invited to open the door of the new Church. Owing to her public duties, she was unable to come but kindly said if they desired it her daughter would be pleased to come, and they were delighted to accept Miss Markham as a substitute. (Applause) He would like to assure Miss Markham of the pleasure it gave them to see her and of how cordially they hoped this would be a very happy memory to her, and that she would be able to look back on this day with unfeigned satisfaction in years to come. (Applause)Mr. J. T. Brears, described by the Chairman as the "Patriarch" of Carcroft, presented a silver key to Miss Markham with which to open the door.
